In 1997 MoHud got to run an autocross on the Lime Rock infield course in conjunction with our regional race. This
is the ex Muntz-Hoffert/ex-Jim Bishop Formcar Formula Vee that Dave McClumpha and I co-owned. I ran against this
car in the early 70s, then owned it 20 or so years later.

Phil Raeder

Terri Novotney and Phil top right.

Phil Raeder was one of MoHud’s most innovative racers. He started his road-racing career in the 1956 with an MG-TC
racing at airports while attending college in the Midwest. After a hiatus he came back in the mid 60s with a boxy
sedan, and eventually found his way to open-wheel cars in Formula C. The four-door was an Renault Gordini R8 C
Sedan.
The FC car is a Lotus 59, one of the Lotus early monocoque cars with which Phil achieved a 4th place finish in
the National Championship Runoffs held in 1973. This car was powered by a "tool room" built DOHC Matra-Gordini
powerplant.
(A 1973 KO article by Phil will be posted soon!)

"Group W"

There probably should be a token representation for the group W bench Racing Team
Here's driver Lloyd “Sandy” Fisher and crewmen Hal Wood and Rich Waring at the Finger Lakes Region “Fun One” at
Watkins Glen, Oct 1969. The car is a Sunbeam Alpine, aka English Thunderbird :-/
Tom Campbell later owned this car, and I think did his SCCA drivers’ school with it before moving on to faster
(and more reliable) machinery.

|
Joe Corbett, Bill Morris

Bill Morris used his Elan for EVERYTHING. He took what most would regard as a somewhat temperamental car and used
it for his daily driver, commuting to GE R&D. He also ran it in gymkhanas, hillclimbs, and a few rallyes (maybe
even the infamous Rallye of the Snowflake). Then he used it to get his SCCA racing license and compete in C Production,
all the while driving his car to the track. That’s Joe Corbett standing alongside. And who remembers when Timing
& Scoring was located on the opposite side of the track from pit lane ?

Screaming Yellow Zonker

For his next challenge Bill decided to build his own car, for the B/Sports Racing class. Dubbed the Screaming Yellow
Zonker, it was tube-frame chassis with a Lotus twin-cam engine and Porsche gearbox. Bill was quite successful with
this car earning a bid or two to the SCCA National Championship Run-Offs back in the days when only the top three
from each division qualified. Here’s he heading off on a victory lap with crew chief Joe Corbett on board. Lime
Rock’s pit lane and start/finish building was a Spartan setting in those days – this must have been 1970 or so.
-- Greg.

Watkins Glen Pits
We seem to have bunches of photos from Lime Rock, so here's something little different for the racing section.
This was the pit lane at Watkins Glen around 1964, designed for use by the Formula One Grand Prix teams.
For reference this is about the area where the current pit exit blends back with the track, on the downhill chute
after turn 1 (the 90)

Paul Hacker

Hacker Express - There's a long history of motorsports in the Hacker family. Paul's father Lou was a pioneer on
local stock car tracks and Paul was quite successful in gymkhanas and ice racing before moving into the SCCA racing
program around 1973. This is the Dodge Colt that started his road-racing adventures

Paul and Jean Hacker in a familiar scene over the years, celebrating in the winner's circle
-- Greg.

Dave

The family’s involvement with MoHud goes back just about to the beginning. Dave’s late parents, his father Francis
“Mac” McClumpha and mother Irma, were flaggers at SCCA racing events going back to the mid 1950s. They both also
served as officers of Mohawk-Hudson Region, as has Dave. Dave’s late sister Diane designed the black/red/white
logo used by the region.
Dave started his racing endeavors in the mid 60s in the D Sedan class with an 850cc Mini. He later switched to
open-wheelers, racing in Formula C with an Alexis and a Brabham (here's Dave in #48 and Phil Raeder in #39 just
going past station 5 at Lime Rock) -- Greg

Paul (Terri) Tariello

Terri at the Glen, 1997
Paul Tariello held positions on the Board as Activities Chairman and Assistant R.E. Terri competed in FF from 1992
to 2002
Paul was one of the quickest FF drivers in the Northeast, winning many races particularly at
Lime Rock. He engineered modifications on the '84 Reynard to make it quicker and his finishes were much better
than expected given the age of the car.

Ray Gaul

Ray also raced a Healey Silverstone. The B Modified designation indicates that it was powered by a big American
v8.
This was a car once owned by legendary sportsman Briggs Cunningham. After Ray blew the engine he advertised this
car for sale in The Knock-Off. Asking price was $500. Any guesses on what this car would be worth today?

Ray Gaul

Ray was another of the region’s pioneer racers. He got a lot of enjoyment out of his MGA, using it for SCCA gymkhanas,
hillclimbs and races. He even took it out on Lake George for the initial days of ice racing in the mid 60s (notice
the Corvette StingRay that’s behind him ? Can you imagine doing that with a modern day Z06!)
